Healthy Food
Eat Better, Start Better
The Eat Better, Start Better guide is a Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England. The guidance, was updated in 2017 and reflects the government’s dietary recommendations for children aged 6 months to 5 years and sets out the food and drink guidelines for early years settings in England. We still use these guidelines for all our menu planning today.
It was developed following the recommendations of the Advisory Panel for Food and Nutrition in Early Years, and was produced to support early years settings in England to meet the nutritional requirements of children in their care, and encourage them to eat well.
The guide has been developed to help early years providers and practitioners to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) welfare requirement for the provision of healthy, balanced and nutritious food and drink. Encouraging children to eat well and learn about food in their early years not only protects their health when they are young, but also sets the foundations for their future health and wellbeing.
